Its been a blast working with Hunter Harrigan and Dennis Magnuson on listing a piece of property that is very special to our team as we have made many memories throughout this property over the years. Point of Rocks Ranch Wyoming: Some ranches receive Trophy status because of their massive building programs, but at Point of Rocks Ranch, only 40 minutes outside of Laramie, Wyoming, the trophies are of the old-fashioned variety: big game and trout of a quality and quantity seldom seen anywhere. If ever a ranch was created for world-class hunting and fishing, this is surely it. Point of Rocks Ranch is over 21 square miles (approximately 13,500 acres) of well-tendered habitat that grows elk, mule deer, pronghorn and trout of proportions that are worthy of magazine covers.

Wildlife thrives at Point of Rocks Ranch because it has been intentionally managed for years with big game and trout in mind. First, the ranch is completely private, with no public roads, public land, or public access anywhere within its well-blocked perimeter, allowing herds to live here relatively undisturbed. Second, an elevation of approximately 7000 feet in the foothills of the Laramie Mountains means cool summers and relatively mild winters, in which herds of elk, mule deer, and pronghorn can thrive year-round. Third, a blend of habitat types from rolling grasslands, granite outcrops, riparian areas, and scattered forest of pine and aspen, create variety that big game love. Fourth, water is abundant, with 12 miles of live streams, making this property a wildlife magnet, while at the same time, providing remarkable fishery potential. It is simply difficult to imagine a better combination of factors conducive to producing both big game and trout.

Big game hunting has been at the core of the Point of Rocks experience for generations. Guided trips have been conducted with quality in mind, with archery, black powder, and rifle hunters doing exceedingly well for trophy specimens of elk, mule deer, and pronghorn alike. The ranch qualifies for landowner tags for all three species, and as it is in General Elk Area 6, is also allows for over-the-counter elk tags for residents, and good drawing odds for nonresidents. With the number and variety of quality hunts available at Point of Rocks Ranch, a commercial outfitting business is a proven enterprise here.

Not to be outdone by the big game, the trout at Point of Rocks Ranch also weigh in as significant attractions here. Twelve miles of small cold streams are perfect habitat for pan-sized brook trout that have preference for dry flies, and several ponds and small lakes produce fish that test even the heaviest of tippets. Monster rainbows and brookies are most common and do exceedingly well in the food-rich cold ponds. Trout up to 5 pounds are not uncommon, and individuals over 10 pounds have been caught. These fish can be caught from shore, but a float tube can be a dream to fish every square foot of the lakes. Not surprisingly, big streamers will often elicit the most aggressive strikes.

Although the ranch is completely private and surrounded by other large private parcels, it is remarkably accessible to the bustling small city of Laramie, only a short distance away. The home of the University of Wyoming, Laramie has a population of 32,000 and is one of Wyoming’s cultural centers. In addition, Wyoming’s capital, Cheyenne, is only a little further, and Denver Colorado and Denver International Airport less than a three hour drive.

Although no improvements other than great fencing and quality roads presently exist on the ranch, power is less than a mile away from its southern boundary, and building sites are virtually unlimited. Visionary owners could construct a state-of-the-art home or lodge completely off-grid utilizing solar or wind power, or a combination of both. Even without a trophy lodge or home, however, Point of Rocks Ranch remains a trophy in our book. Just ask the many hunters or anglers who have been blessed to visit here over the years. It’s hard to imagine improving on the trophy status of a ranch with a 6×6 bull in your sights or a 10-pound rainbow throbbing on the end of your line!
