SAMPLING THE RIVER WITH THE MATCH THE HATCH KIT

INTRODUCTION TO RIVER SAMPLING

For those anglers who may not already know, sampling the river is the process of searching, observing and documenting your entomology findings.

The goal of the Match the Hatch kit is best said in the name of the product. The kit provides the angler with the ability to quickly make observations to easily Match the Hatch with confidence. Adding this pouch to your wading belt gives you the means to approach a river section, collect a sample to determine the flies that match the bugs you discovered in the water. Not only are you able to quickly determine what to tie on for a better opportunity to fish a pattern that the trout are feeding on, but you can even find specific bugs to bring home and tie flies to match. The Match the Hatch kit makes it so you will be spending more time catching and less time guessing on which fly to tie!

MATCH THE HATCH VIALS – WORM & SCUD SAMPLE

While fishing in the South Platte drainages in the Front Range of Colorado, It has become apart of our process to bust out the kit, throw on the Sci-Fly Seine and sample to the river to get a preview of the bugs the fish are eating. We think of our bug findings as not only a menu of what the trout would be eating the section of river we are fishing, but also a menu of fly pattern options we should be considering tying on. See below, as Austin Miller geeks out over the days’ menu on the South Platte.

Not only do we consider the main type of bugs we find, but also the presence of the family types we are identifying. While sampling, its best to inspect the color, size, and bug profile to find the best flies in your box to match. The kit comes with tools so you can help make those hard calls. The kit offers tweezers and an X5 magnifying glass so you can analyze the bug types and characteristics up close. During this trip, we collected two samples in the river and identified a large number of scuds, BWOs, midges, and a few caddis emergers in this section. After reviewing our findings, snapping a few pics and returning the bugs to the water, we were able to make a well-educated selection in our fly box to match the hatch. Heck, we even got into a few fish because of the time we took to sample the river.

For me fly fishing is inherently curious, I’m always questioning; “Well, what are the trout feeding on? Is it subsurface – or are they hitting dries right in front of my eyes?!” I prefer to use the tools available to help answer my questions and match the bugs that the fish are feeding on in the river.

The Kit has now become simply an ingrained piece of my daily wading kit, I simply leave it strapped to my wadding belt as I remove my waders and keep it hanging to dry until my next river venture. Highly functionally, the kit to me is my insurance solution for knowing how to catch fish that day for the stretch of water that I’m challenging.

Whether you are an experienced fly fishing guide looking for a simpler kit to analyze trout diet or a weekend angler looking to learn a little more about the fly patterns you are mimicking, this kit is an investment to help increase your knowledge of the bugs, in the waters which you fish. The Streamside Match the Hatch Kit by River Oracle – sold by Ascent Fly Fishing, can be purchased online & setup on your wading belt for the low price of $45.95 (which is a great deal considering all the money in flies you have wasted like many anglers picking the wrong flies based on what others said or what worked in the past) The Match the Hatch kit should be your next fly fishing kit investment so you can match the catch and land more fish.
